called Grucox Medical which is based at the New Orthopaedic Sports Clinic
at the Sports Science Institute in Newlands, Cape Town.
Mobil-Ice was designed by Specialised Orthopaedic Surgeons, for treating injuries
and pain effectively without medication. But why limit this technology to
treating only people !?!
Mobil-Ice Equine Injury Relief
No dripping ice, no mess, no fuss; hot or cold treatment with compression
all in one.
Most horses, just like athletes, will suffer some sort of injury – capped
hocks, shin soreness, strains to joints and tendons, bruises, tendonitis,
bursitis, and other soft tissue damage resulting from wear and tear, overuse
or a sudden trauma. When symptoms are left untreated, these minor injuries
can become serious and take longer to heal. Many times these injuries will
be treated with some form of hot or cold
treatment.

Heat therapy may have benefits for both acute and chronic injuries. Since heat is a form of energy it is very therapeutic. By increasing metabolic activity in the cells, the heat increases the demand for oxygen in the area therefore increasing blood flow which brings oxygen and nutrients to that area. By increasing the blood flow, heat treatment provides quick relief from muscle spasm and joint pain, stiffness and swelling.
One of the most common chronic injuries in racehorses is arthritis which begins as an inflammatory process in the joints and progresses as the degenerative process, due to wear and tear and metabolic influences, increase. Chances of successful treatment are quite high if the injury is treated immediately.
If the situation becomes chronic, then treatment of the injury can change. Hot and cold therapy can still be used. Although heat would not be applied to an acute swollen area, just as with a human athlete, it can still play a role in the rehabilitation of a chronic injury.
Cold therapy also reduces the risk of injury after heavy exercise. It is the best treatment for strained muscles, ligaments, tendons and there is no more convenient way for applying this treatment than Mobil-Ice. Applying cold therapy to a tissue injury causes the blood vessels to constrict, limiting the blood flow to the injury area and reducing the amount of pain and swelling.
Benefits of cold therapy:
- Reduce pain
- Reduce swelling and inflammation
- To help with recovery from orthopaedic surgery
- To help control muscle damage
- To reduce heat
Benefits of heat therapy:
- Relieves muscle spasm
- Reduces pain
- Quick relief from stiffness
- Relief from chronic conditions i.e. arthritis
Mobil-Ice packs are horse- and user-friendly. It’s a non-toxic, safe, drug free, non-drip and no mess system for treatment, without the use of medication. One pack offers either hot or cold application. Mike, from The Dunes in Noordhoek, who trains racehorses and takes trail rides up to 3 times daily on the beach, uses Mobil-Ice for his horses, before races, after races and for injuries. Also used and recommended by veterinarians of the Cape Town, Dr N. Augustyn and Dr A. Timpson of the Blue Cross Veterinary Hospital and Dr Allen in Milnerton.
This space age microperforation technology involves a 4-layer polymer construction making it extra strong and puncture resistant. Just place in hot water, scrunch and leave. Water enters the one-way surface to activate the polymer and fully expand. After hydration, it will freeze to -18°C or alternatively can be heated in the microwave for heat treatment. The Mobil-Ice will retain its heat or cold for up to half an hour without changing temperature, and the towelling around the ice protects the skin from hot or cold burns. The ice is reusable; just place in hot water to rehydrate before refreezing or heating. It retains temperatures for long periods, has neoprene straps for adjustable compression, is comfortable to wear and allows for patient mobility. All sleeves are machine-washable and reusable.
The ice can also be hydrated with aromatherapy oils for a different kind of soothing.
